What is Holy Communion????????
When people get together such as a family they often share in a meal. It expresses closeness but also shows that we care for one another that everyone is included and has something to eat.
When we are baptized we become a member of the church family, we meet together, pray for each other, worship together and join in the church’s family meal, the Eucharist or as it is sometimes called Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper.
It all began with Jesus and his disciples as Jews joining together for the Passover meal in Jerusalem in an upper room. At Passover the Jewish people remembered how God saved them. As leader at the meal Jesus did as any leader of a Jewish household would do and broke bread, gave thanks to God and gave it to the others adding “take eat this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” and he did the same with the wine saying “drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me”.
We remember Jesus and his disciples together for what we call the ‘last Supper’ on Maundy Thursday in Holy Week just before Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Bread is a basic food the work of many people; it takes away hunger and gives us strength. Wine is used for a celebration and also is the work of many people.
The bread and the wine are a reminder of the generous love for God for each of us in Jesus on the cross in which his body was broken and his blood shed.
When we join together for our church family meal, what makes it so essential to the life of a Christian is we are drawing closer to Jesus and each other, Jesus shares his life with us ‘our daily bread’ and our lives are drawn into his, we are nurtured, sustained in a life of faith in our relationship with Jesus Christ.
As I prefer children to learn about communion before receiving it I am running a course called ‘Fed and forgiven’ for any Grade 1-4 child. It enables children and adult(s) to learn together with interactive age appropriate material.
There are registration forms at the back of church which include a preference for the time of the course. Please fill in and return with any questions to Rev’d Peter.
